Which later metamorphosed to Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB) and now Special Forces Command (SFC) has recounted the circumstances under which president Museveni, family and his entourage survived death while coming back from a trip to China.
Gen Muheesi who was the second in the line of command of the first elite force responsible for the protection of the president and the first family made a chilling confession while lecturing a group of Special Forces command officers on their role of protecting the president.
The General reminded the officers and men of the elite unit that their cardinal role is to “carry the president on their head”.
One time, we left China Chengdu we were flying back here, we reached a place called Urumqi in China we were going to refuel from there but the conditions there could not allow us to land and refuel”.
Chengdu is sub-provincial city which serves as the capital of Sichuan province in the People’s Republic of China.
Gen Muheesi added that “we continued, there was another refuel station in front, Kazakhstan, we reached there it was all white, no landing, the airport was covered with white snow”
“Now, I remember Gen Kavuma was seated across very quiet because we had seen the trouble across, Gen Kiiza tried to land four or five times , trying to look for the runway but no way until Kavuma told me almost landing on the road”.
“It was our trial moment, the president was in front of us, mama Janet, the children and ourselves as we usually accompany him, they were telling us that if you cannot land in Kazakhstan, go ahead and land in Dushanbe in Tajikistan but the fuel we had could not let us reach there”.Gen Muheesi recounts.
“I can’t tell you what was taking place in the aircraft, we were all finished, In my mind I said if we crash and this man (Museveni)dies what will I tell Ugandans ?you can imagine , as if I was going to survive, but just because I was carrying him on my head” he added.
“If you Generals promoted today, you senior officers promoted today, you girls there if you don’t know that you are carrying the president on your head, better leave this unit”. He warned.
He also advised the officers to always ensure that the gap between the president is occupied to avoid giving enemy chances.
“If you generals and officers don’t close the gap between the president, you know that it will be occupied. Always mind the gap, wherever he is, whatever he is doing, mind the gap”.
“One day, I was here, the president had gone to Eritrea, and then I decided to go home. He left like today and then I said let me rash home, see my parents then come back”.
“Now I spent there two days and on my third day when I was coming back because I left the gap, it had been occupied by rumors that I was going to kill the president that I was in the bushes of Mpigi”.
“Reaching here, I was going to be shot, one of the commanders told me that I was lucky because they had planned that when I came to the airport and I start fidgeting with my gun they shoot me”.
“Gen Nabasa, mind the gap, never leave the gap around the president, whether he is away or is here, that gap will be occupied by an enemy or a well-wisher. For my case the ones who carried the rumour were the well-wishers of the president not my enemies”
The General also assured the officers that Uganda will never again witness another war and that the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces will never again be disbanded saying that this ended with the past armies and regimes.
